I no longer have a pet. My foster dog isn't here anymore, and the house seems pretty empty. Which it is! I could leave it that way, or I could find a new pet.

I've owned several dogs before and been around others, including my brother's wolf hybrid, so I'm definitely open to getting another one. OTOH, a cat might suit me very well, too. It would be my first cat. And of course, there are other options. Give me some opinions, please. (Multiple pets are possible, though I wouldn't want to go past two.)

Being a cat lover (I was going to say cat person - but then that brought up images of Brannigan and Novice Hame! o_O), I think they're ideal - they can take themselves for walks, after all; they sleep lots, sometimes in your lap, if you're lucky; and they sleep in the daftest places, which is entertaining.

My inner five year old is saying OMG PUPPEH, but getting a puddy tat is equally viable. You don't have to walk them or give them baths and they don't require training, and they're happy to be left on their own during work hours. On the other hand they kill wildlife and present them to you for approval, and they run the risk of getting squished by cars, and they think they're better than you and merely tolerate your presence :p

But then dogs keep you fit, keep you safe, and you can play fetch with them. ANd they make ample opportunities to meet new people if your interested in that kind of thing. And cat love just doesn't compare to dog love.

On the whole I'd say cats were easier, but dogs are interactive on a whole other level if you train em right.

Gah! I can't choose!!

I've very fond of cats myself. They even come with the bonus of never making you go outside in bad weather. Their maintenance level changes with the breed, but they're generally less maintenance then dogs. They're fun to cuddle with and will always make sure you never get an over inflated sense of self.

I love my kitty.

It's the wrong question to ask a woman with five kids (My husband counts himself as one my children at times.) I simply have no time to care for a pet. I'd say make yourself so busy with other things that you have no time but for yourself in the evening. :D

Depends. If you have the time and inclination, get a dog so I can live vicariously through you. If you're busy, get a cat, or better yet, two cats. They'll barely need you at all and will provide entertainment and purr therapy.

Two kittens are twice the fun of one, and not much more work!

Cat. Always a cat. Just because I can't really have one right now.

Cats are crazy; they own you and do what they want, but, yes. A cat, a cat.

Don't get something that lives in a box, goes out in a wheel and doesn't really take any notice of you and needs cleaning out, and is actually nocturnal. And very short-lived. Heh.

I would vote dog if you have the time and the patience to train them (and then to not get annoyed as they follow you around every time you get up)(my dog is right now sleeping with her head on my laptop). Dogs love their owners so whole-heartedly, I find it hard to resist them. That said, cats are great and hilarious(they are all crazy, or possibly smarter than everyone), and much easier to take care of, so if you think a dog is too much work right now, a cat will certainly help with the empty house situation. I personally don't see the fun in goldfishes, but hey, that's just me.

Caaaaaaaaaaaaaaat!

I've had a few in my life and they are by far the best pet you could ever want. They give cuddles when you're sad, they poop in a box, they have daft half hours, eat spiders and flies, sleep on your nicest clothes, hairball on the floor, decimate wildlife... I'm not painting a good picture here.

Two words describe a cat -- Instant Entertainment. Especially when there's catnip involved.

And you can play Cat Buckaroo.

I'm a cat person and hate almost all dogs, so I'm biased, hah! But cats are so wonderful, even if you end up w/ a neurotic freak like mine, heh.
