A couple days ago I was talking about what kind of pet I might get. Yesterday, I had a chance at both a dog and a cat. I left it up to fate. The dog turned out to be unavailable. The cat, who belonged to a woman who's moving out of state, was available.

So now I have a cat. He is big and orange/brown and very fluffy, and I would show pictures of him but he is currently hiding somewhere and I can't figure out where. His name is Jack. He was answering to it fine last night. This morning, no response.

He followed me all over the house yesterday and kept insisting that I pet him. Today, ha! I'd almost think I imagined him, except that his supplies are still here.

When he shows himself, I'll get him to pose for pictures.

Hiding cats are normal. Eventually he will find a favorite hiding spot or two and you'll know where to go to find him if needed. My current cat likes to hide under things, but one I had years ago would like to find the highest possible point and lurk on top of it.

I had a cat who liked to be high up, too. She would leap from floor to counter top to fridge and then onto the kitchen lighting fixture, then wander around up there till she felt like coming down. Until the day she got too heavy, broke through the plastic sheeting that made up the underside and came raining down on top of my mother. After that she stopped at the fridge.

Poor kitty.

Mine used to lurk on top of either the fridge or this big cabinet/bookcase my mom had. No one was quite sure how she managed to get on top of that one as it was 6ft tall and the closest thing around was a recliner about three feet away. She had to have jumped from the recliner, but it was easily a 6ft jump.

She was fine. Fang was one tough kitty. She'd also nest in open drawers, so you had to check before you shut them or she'd get stuck. Happened a few times, she was 'lost' once for a few days that way. She also once took a spin in the dryer. Each time, she just shook it off, gave a look of 'What? I totally meant to do that.' and started licking her paw in that way they do. My grandparents had her declawed as a kitten, but just the front claws so she could defend herself if she got out. Not only did she develop a mode of attack only using her hind claws, but she worked her front pads in such a way that a whap from her hurt worse than if she HAD scratched you.

She was the queen of the castle, and we all were to recognize her superiority.
