Computer rant
Nov. 28th, 2007 06:04 pmMy new computer burns DVDs. What I did not realize until last night is that it doesn't burn the files in order. Like, I have five things I want to burn on one disk. And I want them in alphabetical order on the disk. And when I select the files I want to burn, not only are they in that alphabetical order but I click on them in the order I want the burn to go. Well, they don't come out that way. In fact, I haven't been able to figure out how my computer DOES settle on the order it uses. To me, it appears to be a random jumble. To my computer, the order evidently makes perfect sense, as three burns over two days have resulted in the same order. So now I have three disks with files a, b, c, d, and e in the order d, a, e, b, c. At this rate, I'm going to run out of blank DVDs.
This is really starting to piss me off.
Generally when I have trouble with something, I look online and find a solution. No luck with that method so far. Option B, I'd download a DVD-burning program that presumably would do what I want, only most of them cost actual money. Or else they aren't compatible with Vista. Or else I tried them last summer (when I was burning on computers away from home) and they weren't user-friendly.
The one good, reliable program I did discover, and still use away from home on XP computers, won't work with Vista. Even if it did, it's trialware and after 10 days, you have to pay for it. All the accessories I need/want cost more than the damn computer itself did! (I still have to buy an anti-virus program, which is another reason I'm reluctant to do any more downloading than I already have.)
I didn't have to think about these things with my old computer. She didn't have a DVD burner, and in the nine years and three months I used her, I never did buy anti-virus software.

Date: 2007-12-02 04:24 am (UTC)I still haven't figured out what causes the jumbled burn order with my computer. But it will COPY a disk perfectly. So if I burn one on a computer away from home and then want to make a copy at home, it'll be fine. I'm going to keep trying to figure out my problem, though. I don't like not knowing how to do something I should be able to do.
