Now that I have my taxes done, I'm moving right along with my viewing. Got through a few serials, all the way to the beginning of The Romans tonight. Here, my thoughts on Planet of Giants and The Rescue.
I really liked Planet of Giants. The Doctor, Barbara, Ian, and Susan are shrunk to tiny sizes and must make their way around what they'd usually view as ordinary surroundings. Come on, Barbara gets bruised by a giant paper clip in this serial! It could happen to anyone, under the circumstances.
An actual fight with one of the large creatures they encountered would have been a nice touch, but I liked the story a lot anyway.
The Rescue had some nice moments, too. It's the first serial after Susan's departure. Poor Doctor, forgetting she isn't there anymore. :( Then Ian made the mistake of remarking on the Doctor's age, not realizing his entire speech was overheard.
Most noteworthy is the introduction of a new companion, Vicki. The Doctor, who's mellowed out quite a bit by now, shares a couple of very sweet scenes with her. He's even enthusiastic about inviting her on board.
One issue: The Rescue is only two parts long. The plot feels rushed and it could have used another segment to develop. Overall, though, it held my attention and I'd be happy to watch it again.
