I'm just slightly obsessed with Big Finish productions, and I recently listened to Bang-Bang-a-Boom! for the third time. It remains my favorite Seventh Doctor audio. The story has the Doctor and Mel entangled in events on a space station called Dark Space 8. It's cracky fun!
The station is hosting the Intergalactic Song Contest when the Doctor and Mel arrive. The main complication: a murderer who could be nearly anyone they meet. Maybe it's Doctor Eleanor Harcourt, who frequently feels so... helpless. Or how about Nicky Newman, the fifth most famous person in the galaxy? Other suspects include the rival singing contestants Gholos and Queen Angvia. They're all very interesting characters who are well developed.
I liked almost every aspect of this audio so much that it's hard to single out the best elements. However, here are a few picks. Mel shines, particularly in pivotal scenes with Nicky. There's great use of humor, the resolution is believable without being overly convoluted, and the final quick scene makes a perfect ending.
Flaws: I had a hard time coming up with any. Finally I descended to nitpicking. I could have done without the single brief vomiting sound effect. Also, I hate this audio's title. I understand why it was chosen; I just plain don't like it.
Conclusion: LISTEN TO THIS AUDIO. It's brilliant. I'd listen to it again right now, only I have a bunch more waiting for me to get to them.
