Twilight fanfic: is it all terrible?

Twilight series quote of the day (from Breaking Dawn, page 94): I've never been so happy in all my life--I wasn't this happy when you decided that you loved me more than you wanted to kill me....

I wonder if good Twilight fanfic exists. My searches have mostly turned up schlock with summaries similar to these:

Bella is a mermaid and Edward is the sailor who finds her.

I suck at summery's just read it.

like twilight but edward is human and bella is the vampire can true love prevail. Read 2 find out!!!!!

I believe, however, that things hit a new low with one particular story. The author was trying to indicate that the fic was a ménage à trois. Actually, it was a foursome and she called it, get this, a Menasha twa.

I broke. I made my first topic at fanficrants in ages about this subject. (BTW, if you go to look at the story in question, be warned that it's extremely adult in nature.)

Has anyone ever found any decent Twilight fic? In my searches, I don't think I saw a single story that I would recommend to anyone I like and want to remain on good terms with.

Silly writer. Obviously you would call that a Neenah twa.

[identity profile] ghost2.livejournal.com 2008-12-07 01:19 am (UTC)(link)
I have a friend from Menasha. I do not want to tell her about this story.

[identity profile] biichan.livejournal.com 2008-12-07 01:22 am (UTC)(link)
I wouldn't want to either!

It's probably a good thing I'm not a member of fanficrants, because otherwise I'd be spamming your rant with far too many jokes about Wisconsin geography.

There's this great Emmett/Bella story, Everything Changed, with some spoilers for Breaking Dawn.

There's also a wonderful Bella/Jacob story, Unhappy Endings.

I don't think I've read a decent Bella/Edward fic yet. Ironic, huh?

[identity profile] ghost2.livejournal.com 2008-12-07 02:25 am (UTC)(link)
Thanks for the links! I liked both stories.

Someone somewhere must have written good Bella/Edward, but I don't know that I have the inclination to go digging through mounds of crap to find it.

My daughter writes Twilight fanfic. Oh the shame.

Edit, I'm not linking cuz she's only 14 and I'm not that cruel a person to inflict it on anyone.

If she proofreads her stuff, she's already ahead of many authors.

The one who wrote about the "Menasha twa?" She's 16 and it shows in her writing. I wonder if her parents know the type of stuff she's been posting. :0

Considering the source material, I don't know that such a thing as "good" Twilight fic is even possible. Except maybe for parodies. ;-)

[identity profile] biichan.livejournal.com 2008-12-07 04:40 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah. The closest I've ever seen is Growing Up Cullen.

[identity profile] niccy07.livejournal.com 2008-12-29 08:16 am (UTC)(link)
Hilarious! ^_^

[identity profile] ghost2.livejournal.com 2008-12-07 07:11 pm (UTC)(link)
I was hoping that I could find a few authors who rose above the source material. It has been tough going so far.

I do think the books are fun, in a pulpy way, if you don't take them seriously.

Has anyone ever found any decent Twilight fic?

Has anyone ever found any decent Twilight originals?

[identity profile] ghost2.livejournal.com 2008-12-07 07:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Heh, I don't dislike the books as much as some people do, but you have a point.

Menasha twa is going to have me giggling for hours. Although it did take me several seconds to figure out what she meant.

[identity profile] ghost2.livejournal.com 2008-12-07 11:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Your icon is hilarious. I have just one Twilight icon. I think that situation must be rectified, if I can only find the sort I have in mind.

I thought Menasha twa was very worthy of a fanficrants post. Just thinking about it now makes me laugh.

I've been in fandom for a couple years *is embrassed* and while I'm not good and critiquing fics, but I can tell you what I like- and I think I'm pretty picky (i.e Mary Sues, bad grammar, and badly written plots should all be gathered in one room and shot- repeatedly) Keep in mind I've never completed the Twilight series - as I can't stand the books-, but for some reason, the fandom for this series still appeals to me- though I agree most fics make me want to claw my eyes out. I'm sadly persistant though.

Here's a fic (probably one out of the two I can safely say I like) I'm currently obsessing over:

Innocent, Vigilant, Ordinary by Oxymoronic8 http://www.twilighted.net/viewstory.php?sid=297

summary from author:
Bella Swan spent the first two years of her life in Forks developing a friendship with Jacob Black that finally turned into something more. As she begins her senior year of high school, a new family moves to town and Bella slowly begins to question the path she thought her life would follow. Sometimes there is a difference between what you think you need and what you never knew you wanted. Takes place during the timeframe of New Moon and Eclipse. J/B at first, but eventually E/B.

No weird characterazation (at least in my opinion) Not to mention I like this much better than the book. But that's just me. There's also a pair of authors I like, but I'll just rec this one for now. Let me know if your interested.

[identity profile] niccy07.livejournal.com 2008-12-29 08:00 am (UTC)(link)
Just to let you know its a WIP, but the author is pretty consistant about her updates

[identity profile] ghost2.livejournal.com 2008-12-29 10:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Thanks for the rec! I just read the first two chapters and so far, so good. If you have any more recommendations, authors or stories (including WIPs), please let me know. :)

[identity profile] niccy07.livejournal.com 2008-12-30 05:52 am (UTC)(link)
Another one of my favorites is:

Scotch, Gin, and the new girl (e/b)

http://www.fanfiction.net/s/4561940/1/

summary from ff.net:

a collaboration featuring jandco and withthevampsofcourse. "Les Liaisons Dangereuses, je croix. We were Cruel Intentions. We are Gossip Girls. We do not give a shit. At all." all-human.

It's a little different, and at first I was dubious about the concept, but I've always loved writing that can turn a cliche into something fun and original. Defintely OOC, but HILARIOUS and you'll find yourself craving more (at least it was like that for me) again, pretty well updated WIP.

I do have more, not all of them with E/B, but I'll go through my list.

[identity profile] ghost2.livejournal.com 2009-01-01 11:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Thanks, I'll look at that story too. :)

I've read this one, It's good

[identity profile] niccy07.livejournal.com 2009-01-09 12:56 am (UTC)(link)
Promise, this is the last one:

http://www.fanfiction.net/s/4500819/4/In_the_Blink_of_an_Eye

Bella is strong here. No whiny, pitiful Bella here. Again E/B (swear to god I hate the books but apparently I'm a bitch for this pairing) - per the author. The author doesn't shy away from the nity-gritty details of reality either:

Despite living in Dawesonville four years now, she and Mark have remained isolated. Some of it boils down to simple logistics. Most of their classmates don't live in or frequent places easy for a woman in a wheelchair to access. Some of it owes to subtle racism. She doubts there are 100 African Americans in the whole town, including the college; most live in nearby Connyville. And a bi-racial couple . . . well, Mark was viewed as uppity for marrying white, Bella just regarded as slumming; around here, only trailer trash married black.

A fic I'm really enjoying that's Alice/Jasper all human is Tie Me Down to This World:
http://www.twilighted.net/viewstory.php?sid=2939

Also, check out the author NoMoreThanUsual - a great canon author.

Anonymous caught some of the best stories - Hiding in Plain Sight by Limona is one of my favs as well. (and thanks for the shout out to Dark Side of the Moon - that's mine 8-)

I've got mostly good stuff on a list on ff if you're interested: http://www.fanfiction.net/community/TwilightMoms_Favorites/56457/

I've got a few good ones: http://www.fanfiction.net/s/3399253/1/Such_A_Pretty_Girl
and http://www.fanfiction.net/s/4998229/1/Cross_My_Heart_and_Hope_To_Die
The first one is WiP. It's Twilight, but Bella has CIPA and a completely different personality. Very well written.
The second is a complete Alice/Jasper fic. "It always was hard to keep things from Alice. So naturally, he had secrets that only she knew." Very fluffy and worth the read.
Hope you enjoy them!

fanfic

(Anonymous) 2009-10-10 12:17 am (UTC)(link)
I write twillight fanfiction and although some of mine are just horrible but some of them are actually really good, like cleaning out my closet, it almost has nothing to do with twilight though. It is REALLY good though.
People-Are-Crazy
(that's my fanfic name)
