I... actually have no great reaction to the casting news, seeing that it's too far soon to tell what the new Doctor will really be like. Mostly, I'm sitting back and watching with some amusement as portions of fandom implode.

X throws a fit and threatens to defriend people who didn't LJ-cut the casting news!

Y thinks the Eleventh Doctor isn't hawt enough!

Z decides to stop watching the show because the new Doctor isn't exactly who she wanted!

And the whole mess quickly made it onto Fandom Wank.

Frankly, I couldn't care less if anyone didn't (or doesn't) cut the news. I've already seen two major American outlets post it online in huge headlines, and that was just during a random browse around the Internet. It isn't feasible to expect to avoid the news for any real length of time.

As for the "hawtness" issue, those people sure must hate certain earlier Doctors.

I also had never heard of most of the frequently mentioned names in contention for the role. They meant virtually nothing to me, and I had no particular expectations. Knowing the outcome, I still have no specific expectations. I've ended up so laid-back about the matter, I'm practically reclining.

(And this fandom still isn't as insane as The X-Files fandom got during the Mulder vs. Doggett wars. NOT EVEN CLOSE.)

At the moment, I'm far more amused by the fact that I have some suspicion who X, Y, and Z are in specific. ;)

I'll be honest, I was tweaked. I was hoping for an older Doctor, I really was. Still, now that the initial irritation has passed, I've found that I'm adopting a "wait and see" approach.

Oh Lord, those XF wars. Ugly, even as a spectator. Ouch.

Some people are annoyed/disappointed, and have voiced their feelings in reasonably calm terms. Then there are the ones who, well, have not. I don't think anyone on my flist has flown off the handle, but various people in other places sure have.

I received the most beautiful flames when I wrote a Doggett/Scully story. My favorite might be the one that started by calling me a sicko with serious mental problems and deteriorated from there. I also knew an author who was regarded as a traitor because she switched from writing Mulder/Scully to Doggett/Scully. And so much more. Those were the days, indeed. The Buffy fandom also got bad at times, much worse than DW has so far.

I'm sure they chose a younger actor, hoping to get a longer run out him than his predicessors that being said, I hope his Doctor kind of lives up to what this incarnation is suppose to be about: Dark Times for the Doctor.

Yeah, I hope the writing is great. If it isn't, it won't really matter who was cast in the role.

I wanted an older Doctor, but I'll reserve judgement until I see him in action. At this stage, I'm cautiously optimistic.

I'd have preferred older, too. Now I'm hoping for an older companion, at least, though I doubt that'll happen.

Yeah, not too optimistic on that front, I must say. Actually, I'd really like a male, non-human companion, but I don't think it's going to happen!

Someone like, say, Frobisher would suit me nicely.

At this point, though, I'd settle simply for a woman from a time period other than the 21st century. But I don't feel like even that is terribly likely.

I'd love a woman from, say, the late 19th/early 20th century, but yes, it's not very likely, is it? Heaven forbid that we be asked to relate to and empathise with a character from a different time period. What's next, a 51st century pansexual Time Agent?

...Wait.

I'm very disappointed they didn't go with an older actor. Suspending my disbelief over someone who looks 15 playing someone who's meant to be over 900 is going to be hard work.

I had older actors in mind, too. If this guy ends up sucking, I wonder if they'll go older the next time around.

I'm with you on the wait and see. What can we tell from here? From the clips on the show, he appears to be a good actor and reasonably versatile, so that'll do me for a start. I'm just not sure why they've given us a year's start for the moaning... Poor guy.

And I like that I don't know him. So many of the suggestions given were so boring and predictable (even though a lot of the actors might have been great, who knows?). Media: so who seems to be in a lot of shows at the moment? efforts.

And, um, when the Doctor did look 900, that wasn't great. ;-)

Maybe they figured they couldn't keep the secret for all that long and decided just to announce it now to get it over with. The most negative of the reactions should die down pretty quickly.

LOL, excellent point!

I'm peeved about the casting choice of course. He's the same age as me for crying out loud!! It's like casting a teenager to play James Bond.

I've vented about it, naturally...but at the end of the day it doesn't really concern me as it's not my show anymore. I quit midway through series 2 and have no intention of returning. I'm quite happy sticking to the Classic series and ignoring everything else.

And oh man, I was right into XF fandom when the Doggett War exploded. I actually like him and Monica now, but back then...hooboy. I didn't whine about it like a little bitch though, I just didn't watch the new episodes and stuck to my dvds. When I got the collector's boxset I finally gave him a fair crack, being several years removed from fandom and stuff, and really enjoyed the Mulderless seasons for the most part.

I doubt I'm gonna be that generous with Nu Hu though. It's waaaaay to far removed from what I consider the show to be to give it a second chance.

Yeah, I have a lot of issues with New Who beyond this casting. So much of it is almost like an entirely different show than the classic series, and not always in good ways, IMO.

The X-Files was my first major online fandom. I remember the moderator of a popular forum publicly expressing her relief that Robert Patrick didn't get an Emmy nomination, because she hadn't wanted to deal with the fan backlash if he had. And the intimidation tactics of flamers who opposed the posting of any Doggett fic, particularly Doggett/Scully material. I was a Mulder/Scully fan at heart, but I wrote my Doggett/Scully story mostly because the flamers pissed me off so much.
