I just validated this one: Mr. and Mrs. Smith or Happy Who-loween. It's a cracked-out Handy & Rose fic that made me laugh a lot. As long as you don't take the pairing too seriously, you might enjoy it, too.

Rose set her briefcase on the hall table and poked her head into the lounge. She groaned at the sight that greeted her. The Doctor sat on the floor surrounded by bits of machinery and piles of scribbled-on paper. He was wearing an oil-stained t-shirt that read “Every time you call tech support, a kitten dies” and a pair of well worn sweat pants. In one hand he held a piece of metal with wires pointing out in all directions from it, and in the other hand he held the sonic screwdriver he had made a few months before. Rose bristled when she thought about how the Doctor had dismantled both the refrigerator and her CD player in order to make the device. She watched as he pointed the sonic at the metal and wires and pushed a button. The sonic buzzed and Rose flinched. She hated that noise.

No spoilers. Just a bit of my opinion.

I liked it, and I say this as someone who saw and hated the initial American pilot (set in Los Angeles). The revised pilot is set in New York and there have been major cast changes, for the better. Unfortunately, the role they most needed to recast, Sam Tyler, is still played by Jason O'Mara and good Lord, I could see him acting throughout most of his scenes. He needs to get better, fast. But if you can get past his acting, LOM was a solid effort.

Already I've seen plenty of criticism about how the show is "too much" like the British original and also how it won't be enough like it because of certain plans TPTB have mentioned for further down the line. Really, all TPTB can do is try to put together the best show they can, because there's no way they're going to make everyone happy.

I won't even get started with my answer to the "Why did they even bother to do a remake/why don't they just air the original series instead?" question right now. Yes, I can address that issue in some depth, because I understand why the British series is not simply rerun on a major American network--I've made a bit of a study out of the American TV industry, just as a hobby, and along the line it's become clear that I know more about it than most people care to. Therefore, I'm fairly likely to agree with network decisions to, say, cancel programs (including shows I like--Veronica Mars, I'm looking at you), because I see the numbers and have a reasonably good idea of what they mean and whether a series is financially viable. In fact, one of my pet peeves is the misspelling of Nielsen, as in those handy Nielsen ratings that measure series performances.

But back to LOM: I judged the show on its own merits, not against the original. I enjoyed it. Will I like next week's episode? Hell, I don't know. I might hate it. Then again, I could say that about any show on the air, including my favorites like Gossip Girl and The Amazing Race. The best I can do is go week to week, and this week, I liked Life on Mars.

For those of you who don't know, the DW/Torchwood/SJA Cliche-swap Ficathon is now open. Basically, each author takes a cliche that applies to one pairing and writes a fic where the cliche is applied to a different pairing. Oh, just click the link and read the description over there; it really does make sense.

At any rate, this has to be the greatest ficathon ever, because it's totally cracked. I appreciate crackiness. I also appreciate cliches, and have (deliberately) written clichefic. One of my earlier efforts was an X-Files story wherein Skinner forced Mulder and Scully to attend the annual FBI ball together, after which they met on a blind date, confessed their true feelings, and immediately began calling each other by their first names. Then there was my Buffy fic where, upon Spike's return from Africa, he and Buffy promptly reconciled and lived happily ever after.

Anyway, I'm going to sign up for this ficathon. I haven't done it yet because I'm still mapping out my plan of attack, and signups don't close until next week.

My main point is, the premise of the ficathon got me to thinking about fanfic cliches. Then all that thinking led me to make up a bit of a list for various pairings.

Five/Tegan: The REAL reason Tegan left the Doctor is that she was pregnant. )

Someone came to the door tonight and wanted to poll me about the election. I usually feel sorry for people who get stuck going door to door. This attitude stems back to when I was nine and had to sell candy bars for a school fundraiser. I knocked on door after door for hours without making a single sale. Finally, my grandmother took pity on me and bought all of my candy. So now, when someone comes to my door with a simple request, if I can I try to help out.

The woman asked who I planned to vote for. I told her I didn't know, was still considering McCain (which I barely am, because I've ruled out Obama), might not vote at all. She asked which issues were most important to me. That was all she wanted to know. It took less than two minutes. She then said she worked for an independent organization with no party affiliation and no agenda, handed me a brochure, and left. I went back inside, and then I looked at the brochure. It was pro-Obama propaganda! Seriously, it was all about how Obama is great and McCain sucks.

The organization is listed on the brochure as Advancing Wisconsin. It's nonprofit and claims to not be authorized by any candidate. I should hope not, considering the bald-faced lies that woman told me. "No agenda"? What the hell is this brochure about, then? "The Choice for President is Clear." Photo of Obama smiling; unflattering photo of McCain. Glowing statements about Obama; relentless McCain bashing. Christ on a crutch, this paper has "agenda" stamped in neon letters on both sides. Fuck you, Advancing Wisconsin and your lying pollster. At least be honest when you come to my door asking questions.

Next time someone knocks, I might not bother to answer the door.

Well, I am now caught up with the show, but it won't much matter. This one's on the verge of cancellation. The ratings are horrible and it's providing a dreadful lead-to to Prison Break, a more valued program. I'm betting production stops soon and there is NO WAY Fox picks up the back nine episodes for this season. No one else is going to want a show that has been bleeding viewers, so whatever's already been shot is all there'll be. Even then, some of those episodes might never air. Fox could get better ratings by airing informercials in that timeslot.

It's too bad, because SCC is pretty good right now. I loved the pilot, then lost interest as the first (abbreviated) season went along. This year is an improvement, though, with John being less annoying, Cameron more awesome, and the writing more even. Enjoy this one while it lasts.

A while back, I said I'd post recs of some of the better stories I've seen while working the Teaspoon queue. My intentions were good; my record-keeping, not so much. Still, I have come up with a handful of recs tonight. A couple of these stories passed through the queue while I was in it, and I caught the others while browsing for anything I missed. BTW, I count the Eighth Doctor era as part of Classic Who. Close enough!

The anti-Gwen comm that asks "What's a Harpy Jack?" (no, I don't know what a "Harpy Jack" is, either) has chosen a winner for its Gwen-bashing contest, and it isn't my story. Now, that is just not right. I read the winning entry, and I'm sure my fic is way worse. Therefore, I should have won. Let's just ignore the fact that to be eligible, I would have had to join the comm, then post and properly tag my entry. As we all know, rules should apply only when they are convenient to us.

However! I found a three-year-old printout of an unfinished Spike/Xander story from my Buffy days and I really feel like I should wrap it up and post it, because I like most of what I wrote. This is good. Back when I wrote it, I even had the sense to save the file on a website instead of on my previous (dead) computer so I don't need to retype a thing.

While I'm at it, I ought to finish my ancient Buffy WIPs. I have an idea for how to end one of them, only it involves ripping off Jack London's Call of the Wild epilogue and totally going against the tone of the rest of the fic. I'm uncomfortable with the thought of sticking a downer ending on what has all along been an extended piece of fluff. It just doesn't seem right. I'll have to think of a way to include my new idea and conclude the story in an appropriately light manner.

Don't correct my punctuation unless you're absolutely sure you're right and I'm wrong. And even then, it's best to do it politely. If you incorrectly "correct" me and you have an attitude while doing so, it irritates me. It especially irritates me on a day when I've been to the dentist and my teeth are still incredibly sensitive and I feel like pulling half of them out by hand.

FYI: Not everyone who plans to vote Republican in this year's presidential election is stupid. (For that matter, not everyone who plans to vote Democrat is, either.) Will people please STFU with the insults already? Just because someone has different views than you, places different values on certain issues, whatever, does not automatically mean that it's okay to make rude, disparaging comments about them. Doing so makes you look like a jackass.

Prison Break is back tonight. And One Tree Hill. (Yes, I watch it. Have since the start. Shut up. ;)

All right, so PB was pretty sucky last season. Somehow I made it through. Kind of. Admittedly, I fell asleep during the finale. Twice. By which I mean, on two separate dates, because I tried to watch the original airing of the finale and then I tried to watch the rerun of it last week. I succeeded in falling asleep both times, out of sheer boredom.

However, I'm willing to give the show another try. I still have hopes that it will return to form, or at least hold my attention enough that I don't nod off again.

(BTW, here is where I'd like to thank my local newspaper for running a TV column that included a spoiler. No, not that old casting news that I quite like; rather, a specific plot point I would rather had been a surprise. Damn it, now it's not. This is the same newspaper that won't run a nightly TV grid because it "takes up too much room" yet is perfectly willing to ruin story developments.)

As for One Tree Hill, I enjoyed last season a lot. Now I want to know what happened with Dan! Where Nathan's career is going! Whether Mouth found a good new job! But no, I don't care about Lucas's love life.
