Twilight series quote of the day (from Breaking Dawn, page 94): I've never been so happy in all my life--I wasn't this happy when you decided that you loved me more than you wanted to kill me....

I wonder if good Twilight fanfic exists. My searches have mostly turned up schlock with summaries similar to these:

Bella is a mermaid and Edward is the sailor who finds her.

I suck at summery's just read it.

like twilight but edward is human and bella is the vampire can true love prevail. Read 2 find out!!!!!

I believe, however, that things hit a new low with one particular story. The author was trying to indicate that the fic was a ménage à trois. Actually, it was a foursome and she called it, get this, a Menasha twa.

I broke. I made my first topic at fanficrants in ages about this subject. (BTW, if you go to look at the story in question, be warned that it's extremely adult in nature.)

Has anyone ever found any decent Twilight fic? In my searches, I don't think I saw a single story that I would recommend to anyone I like and want to remain on good terms with.

I'm making this post a bit later than some, but there's still plenty of time! If anyone would like a Christmas/holiday card from me, leave your address here. Replies are screened; no one will see it except me. Or you can just send me a card (my address is in a flocked post here) and put your return address on the envelope so I can reply. Or you can e-mail it to me: ghost2atlj@gmail.com . If by chance anyone not on my flist would like a card, I'm happy to send to you as well. If you want a card but can't reciprocate, that's fine too. I'm in the U.S.; will mail to any country.

BTW, I have a variety of cards. Some specifically say "Christmas" while others are fairly generic "happy holidays" sorts. If you have a preference, please say so. As for me, I celebrate Christmas (the gifts aspect, anyway) but I'm pretty much neutral on the subject of religion. I'd be perfectly fine with getting any type of card: Christmas, generic, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, what have you.

Title: Match Point
Author: [livejournal.com profile] ghost2
Rating: PG
Word count: about 1600
Characters: Seven/Ace, the TARDIS
Summary: The TARDIS plays matchmaker for the Seventh Doctor and Ace.
A/N: Written for [livejournal.com profile] stars_fell for the Cliche-Swap Ficathon. This story is definitely on the cracky side of the fence. The cliche used was originally for Ten/Rose: The TARDIS plays matchmaker.
Thanks to Julie for looking this over for me.

I would like to know why someone has twice added the following garbled information to the profile of Arcangues, racehorse, at Wikipedia:

However, the product piece did not run very much, and it was a sad ending called the slaughter house forwarding that waited for a horse. It is a thing since Ferdinand to have become the slaughter house forwarding at a Breeders' Cup Classic championship horse.

The English language can become a very ugly thing in the hands of the wrong people.

I'm on track to finish my "novel" in terms of word count reaching 50,000. But for the rest of today and tomorrow, I am chucking NaNo in favor of finishing my Seven/Ace clichefic. In fact, from now until Wednesday morning, I think all NaNo participants should set aside their novels and write Seven/Ace instead. The world would then be a much better place. So that is my proposal.

Sanctuary has been picked up for a second season.

Lipstick Jungle and My Own Worst Enemy have been cancelled, but apparently will both finish out their runs with episodes that have already been shot. Viewership was pretty low for both shows. I watched LJ (because it's awesomely terrible) and I think it deserved to be cancelled. As for Enemy, I thought the pilot was boring and terrible (possibly the worst possible combination) so I'm not crying over that one. Judging from the ratings, not many people will be.

Sounds like the next big news will center on Pushing Daisies (from all I've heard, the word will be bad), Dirty Sexy Money and Eli Stone (bad for one, good for the other; not sure which yet), and Prison Break (could go either way).

Life has been picked up for the full season. It's now airing on Wednesday following Knight Rider (which is undergoing signficant changes, but has already been picked up the season).

Fox has announced its January schedule (subject to change; Fox sometimes does switch things around). House moves to Monday, right before 24. Bones is moving to Thurs. Sarah Connor Chronicles will shift to Friday right before Dollhouse. Horrible night for Fox! I can't remember the last successful show they aired on Friday. It actually might have been The X-Files. In its earlier days.

Bonus points: Joss Whedon's Firefly died in the slot his Dollhouse has drawn. (OTOH, I thought Firefly was intensely mediocre and didn't deserve to make it. I was not much fussed when it bombed out.) But yeah, lately if Fox sticks a new show on Friday it makes me think they must not be too happy with what they've seen of it and are just making a token effort. Hell, if they stick any show on Friday, they look to be cutting their losses.

Prison Break is not on the schedule, but that's what happens to some shows that produce such a low number of episodes a year (only 22). They don't have nearly enough to run a full season and have to take time off. Word is that PB will appear on the schedule later on. I'd guess sometime in March.

Every year, I watch all the new dramas (premiering in the fall) and make my pick for Worst New Show. Last year's winner was the incredible Viva Laughlin, which was cancelled after two airings. Previous title holders include Head Cases and MDs. If I included midseason entries, The Bedford Diaries would also have a place of dishonor.

This season was a bit lacking in serious contenders. The Ex List, Knight Rider, and My Own Worst Enemy are all bad, but not one show in that lot reaches the depths to which the worst of the worst always sinks. After much thought, then, I awarded this year's title of Worst New Show to: Crusoe!

Sure, it looks pretty and a lot of money was poured into it. But no show is allowed to bore me that much. It just is not right. Crusoe is incredibly dumbed down and I could feel my brain cells dying as I watched the pilot. Plus, it's pretty sad when a show set on an island plays the campy-pirates card in its first hour and doesn't even manage to make those pirates interesting. Subsequent episodes have been equally dismal.

Sometimes a show with horrible acting, dreadful writing, and stupid plots claws its way into the so-bad-it's-good division. Other times, it's just plain crap. Congratulations, Crusoe, for falling into the latter category.

BTW, I found a very interesting site with lots of ratings stats. TV By the Numbers predicts a quick death for Crusoe and places series like Life, Pushing Daisies, Eli Stone, and (yet again) The Sarah Connor Chronicles strongly in the danger zone.

I hate my plot and my characters. I like my spelling, punctuation, and grammar.

I don't think this is an ideal situation.

It sucks that the NaNo site has been down for so much of today, the first day of the challenge. I was able to briefly access it only a couple of times, to little use. I can't check the FAQ, go on the forums, or update my word count, which is discouraging. I did get in a decent amount of writing today, though. My goal is 2000 words a day and I just reached it:

2052 / 50000 words. 4% done!

I am going with the vampires and horse racing idea, which is vaguely kinda sorta plotted out. Please don't ask me for details. The working title is "Blood Bay" (a horse color and a vampire reference) and I wrote a prologue as well as a scene that introduces two of the vampires. Good enough for one day.

Yeah, that news.

My brief reaction is under the cut, but you can look at my little mood selection there and decide if you want to click.

Here are a couple of recent stories that I liked a lot.

A List of the Lost, by [livejournal.com profile] aralias (3700 words, G)
Summary: The fifth Doctor has a multitude of companions, but is rarely alone with any of them. Here we have five times he was, each time after losing someone else.

Automatic bonus for being a Fifth Doctor story! Also, this fic has nice characterization of Peri, Turlough, Adric, Nyssa, and Tegan. Probably my favorite part is the one with Nyssa, but each section is very good.

Only Biography, by sahiya (5400 words, All Ages)
Summary: Biographies were the Doctor's favorite literary form. (Crossover with Lois McMaster Bujold's Vorkosiverse)

Here's a crossover that works really well. I liked the way the Tenth Doctor decided to collect a new companion and how he set about doing so. This story is part of a series. I haven't yet read the rest, but I want to.

NaNoWriMo

Like some of you, I'm doing NaNoWriMo this year. My account is here. (ETA: I forgot to say before, writing buddies are welcome!)

First I thought I'd write a vampire novel. The Twilight series vastly amuses me and I was going to do a shorter vampire story earlier this year. Never got around to it.

OTOH, while watching the Breeders' Cup yesterday, I got to thinking. Horse racing is my favorite sport and I'd enjoy writing about it.

So now I'm torn. I'd enjoy either subject, and combining them doesn't make much sense (horse-racing vampires?!?). Maybe I should flip a coin.

I saw this list of shows that a writer predicts will be cancelled by season's end. It consists of 'Til Death, The New Adventures of Old Christine, Privileged, Lipstick Jungle, Sarah Connor Chronicles, Gary Unmarried, The Unit, The Ex List, Knight Rider, and Pushing Daisies. Fortunately, the only two cancellations from that list that would much bother me are Lipstick Jungle and SCC.

Now, hear me out: LJ is terrible. Absolutely terrible. But it's also hilarious. The show is the TV equivalent of badfic. The characters are crazy, the plots are incredibly stupid, and the dialogue is laughable. Then you have my favorite bit, which is Andrew McCarthy turning in a totally bizarre performance where he seems to be doing whatever the hell he wants and getting paid to do it. That he hasn't been fired yet is a minor miracle, but I hope he never is. The entertainment value from seeing him onscreen is just too great. New episode tonight, BTW! If this one gets cancelled, Private Practice is my second choice for so-bad-it's-good viewing. The game cast constantly gets saddled with lousy stories and strange characterization. I'm watching, though.

Then we have SCC, which I like because a lot of it is genuinely good. The author of this article is pretty skeptical about its chances, even though he wrote the piece after the show's surprising season renewal. Doesn't seem to think it'll stick. True, the ratings were really bad again this week--does Fox have some secret plan to goose them? Are they going to schedule SCC after American Idol in January for an episode or two? It didn't work for New Amsterdam, of course. Then again, it did succeed with the horrific Moment of Truth. Side note: Am I the only one who didn't know that a fourth Terminator movie is coming out? It's scheduled for May of next year.

Handy fic

ghost2: (Default)
This has been kind of an annoying day for me, so I channeled part of that frustration into writing and I came up with something I like enough to post. At least, unless my beta reader tells me it's crap and not to bother.

Assuming that doesn't happen, does anyone know of a good Handy-centric comm that accepts fic postings? My story is mildly Handy/Rose, but not enough so that I feel comfortable with posting it at a shippy comm--and I don't belong to any of those, anyway. Yes, I'm way behind with knowing which New Who comms are out there and at the moment I don't feel inclined to seek them out. I'm still a bit too annoyed to fuss with searching around.

P.S. The story is at least 50% crackfic... oh, who am I kidding? It's like 90% crack. Also, depending on which parts I need to revise, that figure could rise. So I need a comm that takes strongly cracky Handy fic with a mild Handy/Rose leaning. It's already slated for Teaspoon and, horrors, ff.net, which I haven't yet given up on.

Anyone watch the premiere of Crusoe last night? No? Just me, then. My advice: Don't bother with this one. Really, a boring show. Next!

How about My Own Worst Enemy? No, I didn't like that one, either. It almost made Heroes seem coherent by comparison.

Better news: Sarah Connor Chronicles improved in ratings over the past couple of airings (and baseball, which replaced it last Monday, failed to do that much better in the demos) so it actually got a full season pickup. That's pretty much the opposite of what looked like happening just a few weeks ago, but they can't cancel everything. Fox is also having trouble on Wed., Thurs., and Fri.

Speaking of cancellation, I wish NBC would get rid of Kath & Kim. Given that it's supposedly a comedy, surely the pilot should have included at least one amusing line.

I do think that Eleventh Hour, Privileged, 90210, Life on Mars, Fringe, and The Mentalist are at least watchable. Still, overall this is a weak season for new shows.
ghost2: (Default)
Viewing ER now, it can be hard to remember that there were whole seasons when the show was the best thing out there. I don't know if anyone on my flist is even still watching it. Last season was pretty rough (I thought a couple of episodes were virtually unwatchable) but the current year is confirmed to be the final one and I'm going to the end with it.

This post contains spoilers for the first two episodes of this season, as well as casting spoilers for future episodes, so the rest of it is under a cut.

Spoilers......... )
