SCC bombed out and Dollhouse did not particularly impress, either. The overnights are here. Basically, the number for viewers ages 18-49 carries the weight.

SCC had 3.9 million total viewers and a 1.4 in the 18-49 group--that means that 1.4% of all people in the U.S. of ages 18-49 watched the show. A 1.4 is a low number.

Dollhouse had 4.7 million total viewers and a 2.0 in the 18-49 group. Most shows drop off from their pilots, so likely the numbers will be worse next week. Maybe not, though. We'll see. Friday has traditionally been a weak night for Fox, and I don't know what their expectations were.

Here are some opinions on Dollhouse. They run quite the range.

Dollhouse

I loved Buffy and Angel. They were two of my fandoms, and I wrote a fair bit of fic for them. That output includes some stuff I still like, and a few WIPs I want to someday finish. I was really hoping that Joss Whedon's newest show would be good.

First, I watched the return of The Sarah Connor Chronicles. So far, so good.

Then came Dollhouse. I tried; I honestly did. I just couldn't help it, though. I fell asleep half an hour in. Looking back, I'm not sure how I managed to keep my eyes open until that point. Dollhouse was terrible. It was more boring than Crusoe, which a few months ago I named worst new show of the season.

Opinion: a keen disappointment. I don't want to watch another episode. I'll take a look at the Nielsen ratings when they come out and post about them in a day or so. Let's see if other viewers agreed with my assessment. At this point, I'm thinking the show will be a quick failure. Maybe, in comparison, Sarah Connor will have strong numbers.

My Cherry Ames boxset from Amazon.com has arrived! Now I have something new to read. I started the first book, Cruise Nurse, today, but haven't had a chance to get too far into it. The weather is actually nice here (above freezing!) so I went out on my bike for a while.

Question for anyone who's watched Demons: I heard that it's really terrible. Is it the Twilight kind of terrible, where its very badness is fascinating? Or is it the boring kind of terrible, like Crusoe? Basically, will it entertain me?

Not a shocker. The numbers were bad this season and I don't think many would argue that the show has been anywhere near its creative peak for a good while now. Though I was still hanging in there, mostly because I like the cast. Fox plans to bury the final episodes on Friday night this spring. Article here.

Inksome

Like seemingly half of my flist, I now have a backup journal over at Inksome. I probably won't use it much, but in case something does happen to LJ that's where I'll go. Also, Inksome allows 150 user pics. I'm going to store my current 110 there and then go find some more to add.

You need an invite code to join. Probably at this stage, any of you who want one already have it, but if you don't I apparently can give away an unlimited number of them. Just ask.

Here's my Inksome profile. If you'd like to friend me there, go for it.

Well, 2009 got off to a rousing start when I slipped and fell on some ice on Jan. 1. I came out of it with just bruises all down my right leg (which I landed on) and a few days of stiffness, but it could have been a lot worse. Last year, a friend of a friend slipped on a sidewalk and broke her pelvis. Yesterday, an old man in this area fell, hit his head, and ended up dying.

Since the 1st, the weather has really turned. Currently the driveway and sidewalk are all over ice. I went out to get the newspaper yesterday, took one step on the pavement, and almost went flat on my face. Since then, to get to the mailbox and the newspaper box on the street, I've cut across the knee-high snow on the lawn, because at least I'm not going to kill myself walking on that stuff.

The street looks like this: and the driveway looks like this: . Two bigger and better pictures are inside the cut.

Parts of the driveway photo make it look merely wet. Oh, so misleading. It's pure ice out there. And yes, the driveway is long. Talk about a pain in the ass to shovel when it snows!

If you love snow and ice, you are welcome to ALL of mine! )

I... actually have no great reaction to the casting news, seeing that it's too far soon to tell what the new Doctor will really be like. Mostly, I'm sitting back and watching with some amusement as portions of fandom implode.

X throws a fit and threatens to defriend people who didn't LJ-cut the casting news!

Y thinks the Eleventh Doctor isn't hawt enough!

Z decides to stop watching the show because the new Doctor isn't exactly who she wanted!

And the whole mess quickly made it onto Fandom Wank.

Frankly, I couldn't care less if anyone didn't (or doesn't) cut the news. I've already seen two major American outlets post it online in huge headlines, and that was just during a random browse around the Internet. It isn't feasible to expect to avoid the news for any real length of time.

As for the "hawtness" issue, those people sure must hate certain earlier Doctors.

I also had never heard of most of the frequently mentioned names in contention for the role. They meant virtually nothing to me, and I had no particular expectations. Knowing the outcome, I still have no specific expectations. I've ended up so laid-back about the matter, I'm practically reclining.

(And this fandom still isn't as insane as The X-Files fandom got during the Mulder vs. Doggett wars. NOT EVEN CLOSE.)

I just realized that I never made a Christmas roundup post. So here one is! It was nice and quiet here, with no annoying relatives visiting, but it included gifts, so it was loads better than Thanksgiving was in pretty much every respect.

I received Christmas cards from some of you guys (much appreciated!) as well as:
six-month Doctor Who Big Finish subscription--when I mentioned having subscribed to a relative, she said she hadn't yet bought me a gift and offered to cover the cost of this one. :D

DVDs
Smallville, seasons 1 and 2. These seasons, having lots of Lex and Lionel in them, make me happy.
Moonlighting, seasons 1-3 of a great show.
Veronica Mars, season 1. I fell in love with this show from the first minute I saw it. Still miss it, too.
The Dark Knight (making me one of the last people in the world to see it), The X-Files: I Want to Believe (I wanted it even though I'd heard it sucked hard), Stardust (I heard this one was very good), Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (I missed it in the theater), The Big Country (classic Western and a great favorite of mine).

Books about my favorite sport, horse racing!
The Longest Shot (about Lil E. Tee, upset winner of the 1992 Kentucky Derby); Dr. Fager; Women of the Year (fillies and mares that won Horse of the Year titles)

Clothes

Store gift cards

Obviously I mostly got stuff I wanted as opposed to "needed" but that was the fun of things. :)

Today I'm mailing my final bunch of Christmas cards--though if anyone does still want one, LMK over here. I can put more out in the mailbox on Monday, or possibly today if you tell me before the mail gets picked up this afternoon.

I also sent out anything I promised anyone from [livejournal.com profile] holiday_wishes.

Big Finish

Well, I've listened to almost all of the batch of audios I bought at auction a couple years ago, so I finally went and got a Big Finish subscription. Main Doctor Who line, six months, starting with the January release. I went for the CDs rather than just the downloads, although of course if you buy the CDs, you automatically get the downloads as well.

I was a little hesitant, since the Jan., Feb., and March releases are all "Key 2 Time" stories. I mean: Key 2 Time? I feel like I'm looking at a badfic title written by someone too lazy to type out to (or, worse, not knowing whether to use two, too, or to and copping out). Who came up with that one? You almost scared me off. Surely someone could have thought of a better way to differentiate these audios from the original Key to Time serials.

The presence of a new companion did not help, either. Plus, if I hate this Key 2 Time thing, my first three purchases are kind of wasted. I almost started the subscription in April instead, because at least I know I like the team of Seven/Ace/Hex, except I don't want to wait that long.

I'm just going to hope the Key 2 Time stories are good. Maybe I'll end up liking Amy as much as I do Charley, Erimem, and most of the other companions.

Speaking of Erimem: ficathon! I'm not really going to think about signing up until after Christmas, but then it's a possibility. Signups are open until January 7. Participants don't necessarily have to write Erimem, either. Other Big Finish characters are options.

Also posted at [livejournal.com profile] who_otp.

Here's the second part of the list I posted last week. Rarer pairings only: Five/Master, Four/Romana II, Erimem/Peri, and more. Additions or corrections? LMK.

See also the kinkmeme at [livejournal.com profile] sizeofthatthing, which has a ton of stories by various anons.

If anyone missed seeing my previous post and would like a holiday card from me, go over here and let me know. I'm going to send the first batch out tomorrow, but I'll also be mailing more cards a little later in the month.

Did you all hear about how NBC is going to hand the 10pm (Eastern) timeslot to Jay Leno starting next season? And not just on one night. No, it's for every single weeknight. It's no secret that NBC is struggling this season. Their new shows are faltering badly, returning shows like Heroes and Law & Order have taken big hits, and ER is ending soon. But giving five hours of so-called "prime time" to a talkshow hosted by Jay Leno? Guarantees that I will not be watching NBC for those five hours. Numerous sources are reporting this story, unless of course NBC backtracks. Possible.

This announcement also means that the chances of renewal for current NBC shows have dropped substantially. Will Life, with its low numbers, be brought back for a third season? How about the struggling Chuck?

So, are Lipstick Jungle and Pushing Daisies and Dirty Sexy Money and Eli Stone cancelled, or not? The actual phrasing has been "not picking up more episodes" but in effect that usually means "ratings were so crappy you are effectively cancelled even though we don't want to use the 'c' word." In other words, unless those shows miraculously sprout a few million more viewers or so, they're dead.

BTW, that rumor about Pushing Daisies coming back next fall for 13 episodes? Apparently it was a story started by a fansite that had nothing to back up its claim other than a supposed "unnamed source" that either never existed or was just plain wrong.
