Doctor Who Calufrax recs
Feb. 12th, 2008 04:17 pmI decided to try to get more organized. I recently did a week's worth of fic recommendations at
calufrax (the rec comm for stories posted at Teaspoon) and below are my picks.
Go over to Calufrax to read my comments on each story, and also to see all the great recs made by other people.

shiny new icons!
Jan. 28th, 2008 04:55 pmFirst, thanks to the person who gave me two months of paid LJ time. Now I can have a bunch more icons, which I had been wanting! :) I've already added a lot, and probably will fill the remaining slots during my next hunt later tonight.
Also, I've been trying out the digital camera I got for Christmas. I don't take many pictures, but my old 35mm died and digital seemed the way to go for a replacement. Under the cut is a photo of my new computer.

Why ff.net should go on moderated status
Jan. 19th, 2008 10:46 pmSo, I'm over at fanfiction.net just about every day, hoping to see something worth reading. More often, however, I find crap like the following in the Doctor Who section:
it's a reunion story with jack in it an the geast star face of boe but what happands when the doctor gets to pete's world.
And that was just the summary! Somehow I made it all the way through the abysmal first chapter, as well. Looking back, though, I'm not sure how.
On a brighter note, I might be doing DW recs for
rec50 again. At least, I volunteered and am waiting to hear back. I made 50 recs over there in 2006 and by now I think I can come up with a lot of new ones.

Finished! (but winter still SUCKS)
Dec. 15th, 2007 07:59 pmI think I've mailed out everything I said I would. Holiday cards, postcards, packages. Yesterday I sent a package to Finland, one to Florida, one to Michigan, DVDs to North Carolina (I finally tried the Lightscribe function on my new computer, had some fun playing around with that). The last few holiday cards went out to anyone who replied to my earlier post. I even sent gifts to my mother and stepfather without waiting till the last minute.
The only people I have left to buy for live in town, so I have some time to figure out what to get them. I was most concerned with mailing stuff out in time, on a day when the weather was not quite as craptastic as usual since I had to walk all over outside yesterday. Good thing I didn't wait until today. Yesterday was a balmy 17 degrees (F)... that's about -8 C, right? Anyway, I believe this morning hit a spectacular new low, plus it snowed again. Was as slick as an ice rink on the driveway. I HATE WINTER WITH A BURNING PASSION.
However, I am cheered by the fact that I finished the most pressing of the holiday matters. I think I'll hibernate for the remainder of the weekend and brave the outdoors again on Monday.

Computer rant
Nov. 28th, 2007 06:04 pmMy new computer burns DVDs. What I did not realize until last night is that it doesn't burn the files in order. Like, I have five things I want to burn on one disk. And I want them in alphabetical order on the disk. And when I select the files I want to burn, not only are they in that alphabetical order but I click on them in the order I want the burn to go. Well, they don't come out that way. In fact, I haven't been able to figure out how my computer DOES settle on the order it uses. To me, it appears to be a random jumble. To my computer, the order evidently makes perfect sense, as three burns over two days have resulted in the same order. So now I have three disks with files a, b, c, d, and e in the order d, a, e, b, c. At this rate, I'm going to run out of blank DVDs.
This is really starting to piss me off.
Generally when I have trouble with something, I look online and find a solution. No luck with that method so far. Option B, I'd download a DVD-burning program that presumably would do what I want, only most of them cost actual money. Or else they aren't compatible with Vista. Or else I tried them last summer (when I was burning on computers away from home) and they weren't user-friendly.
The one good, reliable program I did discover, and still use away from home on XP computers, won't work with Vista. Even if it did, it's trialware and after 10 days, you have to pay for it. All the accessories I need/want cost more than the damn computer itself did! (I still have to buy an anti-virus program, which is another reason I'm reluctant to do any more downloading than I already have.)
I didn't have to think about these things with my old computer. She didn't have a DVD burner, and in the nine years and three months I used her, I never did buy anti-virus software.

New computer
Nov. 16th, 2007 09:31 pmMy new computer was delivered on Tuesday. It's beautiful and fast, and I love it. I'm trying to get used to Windows Vista (which isn't terribly user-friendly; it took me half an hour and much paging through manuals to figure out how to restart) but I mainly just want to go online anyway. As long as it gets me there, I don't care about much else. Bonus: I have a printer again. It's a cheap one that came with the package, but it's definitely better than nothing.
Computer progress
Nov. 7th, 2007 09:27 pmUpon hearing that my computer had died, my mother came up with the brilliant idea of buying me a USED one. And apparently, shipping it to me, which would cost a small fortune. She meant well, but she knows little about computers and could easily have bought me something totally unsuitable. Besides, for the cost of a used (possibly well outdated) computer plus postage, I could buy a new one locally that suits my needs.
Which is exactly what I did today. It won't be delivered and installed till next Tuesday, but I've made it this long without one. Luckily, I had saved enough money over the last several months that I had enough to cover all the costs with a little left over.
It'll be great to finally be able to get online from home with a fast computer that can do what I want.

Anyone have computer-buying advice?
Oct. 20th, 2007 02:22 pmMy computer died last night. She was over nine years old and still on her original mousepad, keyboard, and monitor. She was vastly outdated years ago, but I kept plugging along with her. Today I am using a computer at the local college to get online, though that I can't do that all the time. It just isn't feasible. Anyway, maybe I can squeeze together around $500 and buy a low-end replacement from Best Buy. A new computer in the cheapest price range would probably be capable of much more than my ancient girl was. But I need advice!

My autographed celebrity photo collection
Sep. 13th, 2007 08:42 pmA few years ago, I scanned some of the autographed celebrity photos I've collected. And I just found the website where I posted them. In case anyone is interested in looking, it's here.
As an idea of what pics I have, there's a "movie actors" section (including Joan Fontaine, Jack Nicholson, Robert Mitchum, James Stewart, and Shirley Temple), TV actors (William Shatner, Susan Lucci, etc.), about a dozen athletes (including Arnold Palmer, Steve Young, and Nancy Kerrigan), a dozen politicians (including President Clinton), and eight singers (Barbra Streisand and Dean Martin are two).

I am officially in hell.
Sep. 11th, 2007 10:21 pmI think this is the first time I've used my "Doctor strangling Peri" icon on two posts in a row, but HELL, it is warranted.
My mother unexpectedly showed up today. She lives several states away, did not give any sort of warning that she was coming, and has already proceeded to drive me nearly insane.
It's the little things. The little things she does nearly every minute she's near me. That makes approximately 400 things today alone. Like I said, they're small things, but they are incredibly irritating. Just a few of them: She criticized the "clunky white shoes" I was wearing (they're nearly new Reeboks in excellent condition, for Chrissake); during lunch, while darting embarrassed little looks around the room at the other customers to see if they were staring at me, hissed, "Why are you eating your chicken THAT way?" (we were in a fast-food restaurant, I wasn't exactly licking my fingers after every bite, and NO ONE was watching me because NO ONE cared except her); called me her "little pork chop" (admittedly, not as bad as some of the other nicknames she has for me, but still); and ruined my plans for tonight. I was so tired after spending basically all day with her and my stepfather that I didn't have any energy at the end of it and I cancelled my outing.
I had to vent. If she doesn't go home tomorrow, things will not be pretty.

Seven things meme
Sep. 1st, 2007 10:58 pmGot tagged by
happydalek and decided to fill this out.
1. List seven habits/quirks/facts about yourself.
2. Tag seven people to do the same.
3. Do not tag the person who tagged you or say that you tag whoever wants to do it.

I tag:

eryaforsthye,
fearlessfirefly,
mad_march_hare, and
seldra. (ETA: I really can count. For some reason, though, I accidentally tagged just five people instead of seven and after the fact, there's no point in adding two.)

Book recommendations?
Sep. 1st, 2007 09:50 amI'm desperate for anything decent to read. Recs are needed!
To give an idea of the sort of book I might like: A while back,
yumemisama recommended Dorothy Sayers' Lord Peter Wimsey mysteries. I read all of them within a month. I own all the Harry Potter books, enjoyed The DaVinci Code, and like John Grisham's stuff.
I'd rather avoid horror (no Stephen King or the like!) and depressing subjects. Humor and series with continuing characters would be nice.
Any ideas?

Want to trade lives?
Jun. 2nd, 2007 02:51 pmI have had THE worst last three weeks. Seriously, almost unbelievably weird and screwed-up. Yesterday I took a break from it all (as much as I could) and I am taking another break right now. I need to retain at least a vestige of sanity, because the "fun" isn't over yet.
So that's why I didn't do the writing I had planned for May, or much of anything else either.
Right, onto a more positive topic. Early in May, I finally figured out how to burn DVDs. I know I said I was giving up, but I'm very stubborn and I kept at it anyway. Eventually found a program that wasn't impossible to understand, fiddled around with it, and sorted things out. More or less. Now, instead of not having a clue what I'm doing, I kind of know what to do. It's progress. :)
